Patrick Kinlaw, Watercolor Artist

A native North Carolinian, Patrick began painting after retiring as superintendent of the sixth-largest school district in Virginia in 2018, having devoted 41 years to nurturing young minds. Painting was always something he had an interest in, but he never had the time. Upon retirement, he returned home to North Carolina and became a student of Carol Mann, a noted and award-winning watercolor artist and former co-owner of The Lemonade Gallery in Washington, NC.
Patrick enjoys subject variety when painting. From local/coastal scenes to still life to pets/animals, each painting offers a new challenge. His paintings have earned medals in the Pitt/Greenville Senior Games in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 and a Viewer’s Choice award in 2022. He has been featured three times as Artist of the Month in Cypress Landing, a residential development of 700 homes on the Chocowinity Bay in NC. He is a member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina. In addition to exhibits in The Lemonade Gallery, Patrick also has paintings in galleries in Belhaven and Ocracoke, NC.
Patrick holds two degrees from East Carolina University and a doctoral degree from the University of Virginia. He and his wife love being back in eastern North Carolina. When he is not painting, Patrick is an avid pickleball player.

Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.

– Vincent Van Gogh

In watercolor painting, every finished piece is the result of countless small moments—each deliberate brushstroke, the careful blending of pigment, and the natural flow of water on paper. By layering colors and focusing on subtle details, I aim to bring each subject to life in a way that captures its unique character. Whether painting a coastal shoreline or a quiet wildlife portrait, it is these small elements coming together that define the final work.
